Ethiopia: Guji continues protest against MIDROC gold mine
ESAT News (May 2, 2018)
People living near a gold mine in Southern Ethiopia have continued protest demonstrations for the third day against the extension of contracts for MIDROC Gold, a company that has been extracting gold for the last two decades.
Residents say chemicals released from the gold mine have posed health hazards and are responsible for many ailments including birth defects, disabilities and blindness.
Security forces use tear gas to disperse protesters and information reaching ESAT show several students were beaten, arrested and taken to undisclosed locations.
Authorities have arrested nine members of a local administration in Harqalo accusing them of instigating the protests.
Elders and traditional leaders have reportedly taken a lead in the demonstrations that later gathered at the headquarters of the gold mine.
Schools in the area have been closed as students joined the protests.
Communication head with the Oromo region, Dr. Negeri Lencho, was quoted as saying that projects that are threats to the health of communities should not be allowed to continue.
Boycott the TpLf regime by withdrawing any commercial or social relations with the TpLf regime which is currently colonizing Ethiopia as your action of punishment and protest. Do not send foreign currency to families and friends in #Ethiopia though Government chain of money transfer. Send it through individuals that has no connection with the regime if it is necessary to do so. Stop any investment in Ethiopia using foreign currency. Stop using any business relations with individuals and organizations considered to be a beneficiary or supporter of TpLf regime both inside and outside Ethiopia. For example, Stop using Ethiopian Airlines (TpLf Airlines) and start to use other alternative both for commercial and international flights. Stop using any Effort corporation services and products inside and out side Ethiopia. Stop using Government owned business but empower individual business that has not ties with the regime. Do anything and everything that can punish the regime finically.
