Lemma Megersa, Ethiopian Minister of Defense

OPDO: The irredeemable Criminal Gang

The egregious crimes committed by OPDO against our people for over a quarter of a century cuts deep in our collective consciousness. In their bid to serve the enemy and fill their belly and wallets, they committed unforgettable heinous acts against Oromo people.

As a result of the atrocious acts by OPDO cadres, we lost innumerable and irreplaceable heroines and heroes. OPDO cadre’s hands are awash with Oromo blood. Millions of Oromo farmers were removed from their ancestral lands and reduced to homelessness without any subsistence. The lives of this generation are irreversibly affected forever. Despite all that, our people gave OPDO a second chance in order to bring about a social healing.

Adding insult to injury, instead of showing remorse for their past misdeeds, they feel embolden and are continuing perfecting their criminal scheme. The land grab is being intensified and mass incarcerations and extrajudicial killings are rampant.

They have joined the Nafxanya camp – the sworn enemy of Oromo people to destroy Oromummaa: Oromo and Oromiyaa. Dropping the Oromo-prefix, they have demonstrated their lineup and the fronts are clearly marked. There should be no ambiguity or illusion anymore about what OPDO/ODP/Bilxiginnaa stands for.

Lammaa Afaan Dammaa: The long-awaited Messiah missing in action

Lammaa Magarsaa was the singular figure that gave the OPDO the semblance of redemption and credence openly acknowledging their past misdeeds, asking for forgiveness and promising a new direction that prioritizes Oromo National Interest (ONI). Lamma appealed to Oromo inner feelings, sounded genuine and the Oromo people gave him the benefit of the doubt, despite reservations about the OPDO as a whole.

The doubts about Lamma’s delivery of the promises began with his removal from Oromiyaa State Administration. The swift and consequential move taken by Abiy to isolate, frustrate and marginalize the nationalist elements in Oromo body politics included Obboo Lammaa Magarsaa.

Some hoped that Obboo Lammaa’s new position can help him garner more influence by virtue of his authority, disregarding Abiy’s machinations. The long-awaited Messiah doesn’t seem to show up at all, himself trapped in unknown condition. Let alone rescuing the nation, his own wellbeing is questionable. Oromiyaa being bombed ruthlessly by Federal Forces while Obboo Lamma Magarsaa is at the helm of the Defense Ministry is quite puzzling. If the Messiah doesn’t show up when he is needed the most, his position becomes questionable.

Victims of Abiy’s intrigue – Obboo Lamma and Oromo National Interest:

What Obboo Lammaa is currently up to isn’t clear. The status of Oromo National Interest is however obvious. The Oromo Nation is under the existential threat posed by Abiy and Nafxanyaa. Waiting for the Messiah seems no more feasible. We have to chart an alternative pathway to achieve our cherished goal: Bilisummaa. The next frontier must be pressurizing GAMTAA – The coalition of ABO, KFO & PBO to live up to their National Duties. Any of them renegading on Oromo National Interest must be punishable by VOTES.

  1. Indeed, Dr Guddisaa Muleta!

Obboo Lammaa Magarsaa, the assumed “Messiah” of Oromia/Ethiopia, who was entrusted to be the custodian of the Oromo victories, for which thousands of our bright heroines and heroes sacrificed, is no where to be seen. Abiy Ahmed, the power thirsty stooge of the neo-neftegna, has used Lammaa Magarsaa as a walking stick to grab power, and embarked on undoing the gains that the great Oromo people have made through their bitter struggles. The Oromo, particularly, the “leaders” who handed over the victory of our people to “reformed” OPDO, who shamelessly changed their clothing and turned from being TPLF servants to being neo-neftegna mules in Oromia, failed to grasp basic natures of the Ethiopian politics. After uttering “gooftaan keenya ummata keenya”, and gaining the trust of the Oromo people, Lammaa was manipulated into installing Abiy Ahmed.

Tragically, after the Oromo protest victories were snatched, by the OPDO the neo-neftegna lost no time with their plan to use the anti-Oromo prime minister, who has posed to be from Oromia, to disguise his intentions to secure his future. Like any power mongering dictator Abiy, moved on to substituting Lammaa and other OPDO officials, who have shown sympathy for the Oromo cause, by “new men and women who will obey without question or pause”. The likes of Lencho Bati and others who have been hanging around for leftovers have been suitable recruits to fill the vacuum. As the saying goes, while “it is possible to make soup from fish, it is impossible to make fish from soup”, and the OPDO/ODP/PP soon reverted to doing what they have done since their creation. Oromo victories were snatched for the third time just like 1974 and 1991.

Abiy Ahmed, who has been elivated to power in the same manner in which Benito Mussolini was made prime minster, has chosen to ride on the neo-neftegna fascist agendas of controlling the more than eighty nations of Ethiopia. Albright in her book, “Fascism: A Warning”, notes the extra length to which fascist leaders go in order to “consolidate authority after climbing into a position of power”, including “controlling information, spreading lies”, etc. Abiy and his neo-neftegna handlers are doing anything in their power to discredit Oromo nationalism and sanitize the brutal past of Ethiopia to which the Oromo and other historically marginalized nations have been subjected. They attempt to casually discount the identity questions of the Ethiopian nations to promote the Ethiopia created in their image, channelling every benefits towards them. Ironically, while they try to hide themselves under their cover, “Ethiopianism”, they cannot hide their yearn for the identity to which they think they belong – neftegnaism.

Identities according to Francis Fukuyama (2018): “can be and are incredibly varied, based on nation, religion, ethnicity, sexual orientation, or gender. They are all manifestations of a common phenomenon, that of identity politics…, and identity has a wide number of meanings today, in some cases referring simply to social categories or roles, in others to basic information about oneself. .., and identity always existed”. This means that there are valid identities of the individual nations of Ethiopia as well as neftegna identity, which is disguised as uniform “Ethiopian” identity.

Simply put, Abiy and his neo-neftegna handlers are trying to reimpose neftegna identity on the Oromo and other Ethiopian nations, indirectly, in order to be able to control political power and resources of the country, under the guise of “Ethiopian Nationalism”. Mind you, in doing this they are denying the Oromo and other nations “human dignity” both “intrinsic worth as people with agency” as well as “dignity due to one’s membership in a larger group of shared memory and experience”.

Although the Oromo struggle has reached a point of no return, the government of Abiy Ahmed is waging wars on the Oromo people, putting the western and southern parts of the Oromia under undeclared command post. Oromo blood is being spilled to keep OPDO/EPRDF/PP – aka neo-neftegna gangs in power. Oromo citizens are being hunted and incarcerated for supporting political parties, which champion causes close to their hearts and for refusing to abandon the cause for which their comrades and family members paid with their lives.

Nevertheless, the future belongs to the great Oromo people,n and no forces of evil including the Ethiopian government’s acts of violence can reverse the birth of freedom in Oromia in particular and Ethiopia in general. Dr Martin Luther King made the following remarks when his oppressors attempted to silence legitimate protests against segregation, by trying to divide the oppressed and jailing them on false charges, and finally bombed his house in order to force them into submission. Dr King asserted: “I want you to know that if M. L. King had never born this movement would have taken place. I just happened to be here. You know there comes a time when time itself is ready for change. That time has come in Montgomery, and I had nothing to do with it”. Likewise, time has already come in Ethiopia for genuine change, whether the government of Ethiopia and the neo-neftegna like it or not. Whether the PP government wages war on the Oromo, whether the neo-neftegna finance the wars in Oromia and sponsor gangs to terrorize our people, whether Lammaa Magarsaa is sidelined or hiding behind the scene, after fulfilling the mission of installing neo-neftegna on power, time has come for the Oromo and the historically subjugated nations of Ethiopia. No one can stop the speeding train of freedom.

What is expected from the Oromo, particularly, qeerroo and qarree is to keep there unity which is forged through the blood of their beloved brothers and sisters, and march towards achieving Oromo just and sacred goals. Oromo political and civic organizations as well as individual elites must be super organized, and provide leadership.

Beware: “In politics, being deceived is no excuse”!
