The Meaning of Haacaaluu (or Haacaaluu’s Brand of Music)

The Meaning of Haacaaluu (or Haacaaluu’s Brand of Music)

Electrifying, epic, mesmerizing, animated, and riveting, he was at his sharpest!

Musically, he blew me away! He was deep, enigmatic, resilient, enduring, and affirming – all at the same time. Rhythmically rejuvenating, and beautiful, that performance was [almost] pitch-perfect!

He not only harnesses and deploys the deep well of Oromo traditional music with an astonishing directness and depth, he also represents a new generation of Oromo musicians who can capture and mesmerize the imagination of the Oromo public and beyond.

Politically, the performance expresses that which cannot be expressed in words. Hacaaluu shows that fear is skin-deep. In this song, he not only expresses that which cannot be easily expressed in words, he finds a way to fly over and above the tanks, the discourses, and the walls of oppression. He says you can no longer pin us down, we are too big, too hopeful, too resilient, to fired up – jirtuu, jirtuu, … eessa jirtu … yaallee hamma dandeenyuu? …! He reveals the unlived life that we all aspire to …

In an excellent book called ‘Utopia in Performance,’ Jill Dolan uses the phrase ‘utopian performative’ to capture and express those ‘small but profound moments in which performance calls the attention of the audience in a way that lifts everyone slightly above the present, into a hopeful feeling of what the world might be like if every moment of our lives were as emotionally voluminous, generous, aesthetically striking, and intersubjectively intense.’ That is what Haacaaluu’s performance is really all about – a utopian performance that embodied such a paradigmatic stories as to summon our common deliberation
