Ethiopian PM gives final warning to “chaos instigators”
ADDIS ABABA, July 15 (Xinhua) — Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Sunday warned “chaos instigators” that they have been given final chance to desist from their “destructive activities.”
Speaking in a live broadcast, Ahmed said in recent weeks violent clashes in Southern, Oromia and Ethiopia Somali regional states have left many dead and many others in mourning for lost loved ones.
The PM didn’t specifically identify “the chaos instigators” but he urged them to learn the value of peace and love before he takes measures against their misdeeds.
Ethnic conflicts along in Southern, Oromia and Somali regional states in recent weeks have left more than a million Ethiopians displaced and unknown number of people dead.
Ahmed’s warning comes as on Friday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM), said over 800,000 internally displaced people are living without adequate shelter and safe sanitation in Ethiopia.
The UN’s Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) on Thursday released 15 million U.S. dollars to urgently scale up humanitarian assistance to people affected by escalating inter-communal violence in Ethiopia.
Ethiopia follows an ethnic federalism model, which has been credited with giving self-governance rights to the more than 80 ethnic groups that make up the country’s estimated 100 million people.
However, critics say the ethnic federalism model magnifies ethnic diversity at the expense of national unity, leading to occasional ethnic tension and clashes
