The State of Emergency may be over but there’s no sign of fundamental changes to address underlying problems
It’s nearly a month since the ruling coalition’s parliamentarians and their allies, who hold all the seats, voted to restore habeas corpus and suspend the State of Emergency (SoE). They also lifted the immunity from prosecution of one of their number, Alemayehu Gojo, a Deputy Finance Minister, to aid a corruption probe. The ruling Ethiopian People’s Revolutionary Democratic Front (EPRDF) may have thought it a good day’s work, but it has only papered over serious problems.
