The Eritrea and Ethiopia Rapprochement: Understanding the Political, Economic and Security Impacts

The Eritrea and Ethiopia Rapprochement: Understanding the Political, Economic and Security ImpactsOverview

(chathamhouse)–Eritrea and Ethiopia signed a historic declaration of peace in July, bringing an end to 20 years of war and stalemate between the two countries. A new era of friendship is rapidly being ushered in, with Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and President Isaias Afwerki visiting each other’s countries and reestablishing diplomatic relations. Normalization is expected to include desecuritization and re-opening of the border for movement and trade, as well as restoration of Ethiopia’s access to Eritrea’s two ports. These developments have been lauded by the people of both countries and by regional and international partners.

Speakers at this event will examine the scope and nature of the rapprochement, including what these fast-moving developments mean politically in both countries, the important areas of implementation and future reforms, the economic dividend of restoring relations and significance for regional integration as well as the implications for peace and security in the Horn of Africa and broader international engagement.

Attendance at this event is by invitation only.
