Medrek/OFC poised to quit the dialogue between EPRDF and opposition parties in Ethiopia
Medrek/OFC is the largest genuine opposition whose leaders and an outsized number of members have been detained due to the ongoing popular uprising that began in November 2015 and continues until now. The leaders of this influential party, highly respected individuals such as Dr. Merera Gudina and Bekele Gerba, are in jail. According to sources, Medrek/OFC have the following prerequisites for the dialogue to resume:
1. Leaders and all political prisoners of OFC must be released.
2. An independent third party or mediators must be present.
3. All regulations under the State of Emergency must be lifted.
Releasing the leaders would be a meaningful gesture that would demonstrate that the government is earnest in its desire for dialogue. Failure to take these serious steps would reveal that the dialogue consists of empty words which are pure political drama employed to buy time.
The next meeting is said to be the final meeting for Medrek/OFC to continue with the discussion or withdraw. If the ruling party is not in a position to accept the above prerequisites, there is no justification to waste time. The ruling party should either take this chance to compromise and address the legitimate grievances of the people or face serious protests from the frustrated masses.
