Congresswoman Betty McCollum calls on the US Congress “to review the more than $500 million of annual U.S. assistance to Ethiopia. ”
The Oromo Community of Minnesota deserves special recognition for its tireless work to promote justice, democracy, and non-violence in Ethiopia. The brutal and repressive Ethiopian regime, led by Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn, is murdering and jailing innocent civilians, silencing all opposition political voices, and has imposed a “state of emergency” to legitimize their abuses. The recent jailing of Oromo opposition leader Merera Gudina following his address to the European Parliament is particularly egregious. He should be released from jail immediately.
In light of the actions of this brutal dictatorship, it is time for Congress to review the more than $500 million of annual U.S. assistance to Ethiopia. The Ethiopian government clearly does not share America’s democratic values and our taxpayer dollars should not support their anti-democratic brutality.
