Disturbing is Dr.Tedros Adhanom’s horse trading on human rights, ironically to become WHO head
By Keffyalew Gebremedhin The Ethiopia Observatory (TEO)
In the World Health Assembly, unlike the narrow pool of voters in the WHO’s 34-member Executive Board, one vote for 194 nations each is more promising. If my past experience is any guide, there is better chance to prevail over dictators and hope for qualitative democracy in WHA in that regard!

While about ten million Ethiopians are hungry, the eyebrow raising story is that of the TPLF regime preparing to export hundreds and thousands tons of maize to drought affected East and Southern African countries.
Quoting the Agricultural Transformation Agency (ATA), Capital reports:
“EAGC reports estimates from the Agricultural Transformation Agency of over 1,000,000 metric tons of white maize surplus e available for export, a record bumper maize harvest amid a regional drought that poses a major challenge to the region’s food security outlook. In 2016, an estimated 40 million people in eastern, southern and Central Africa faced hunger due to similar conditions.

Why I am opposed to Dr. Tedros Adhanom becoming the ninth director-general of WHO
By Keffyalew Gebremedhin The Ethiopia Observatory (TEO)
For those who are pressed for time, they have my sympathy. As a retired person, I recall how that frays the nerves.
My persuasion in opposing Dr. Tedros Adhanom’s aspiration to become ninth director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO) has benefitted from life experiences, my education at home and abroad, as well as international experiences as a former diplomat for my country and as international civil servant with the United Nations in New York and Geneva.

UN Human Rights Chief blocked access to protest areas in Ethiopia

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) — Ethiopian officials have blocked United Nations access to areas that experienced deadly protests during one of the country’s most violent periods in recent memory, the U.N. human rights chief said Thursday.
Zeid Ra’ad al-Hussein spoke during a three-day visit to the East African nation at the government’s invitation. Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn has rejected United Nations and other outside requests to investigate the months of anti-government protests demanding more political freedoms.

UN human rights chief pushes for inquiry into Ethiopia unrest

ADDIS ABABA: The United Nations human rights chief said on Thursday he would push Ethiopia to allow his agency to investigate rights abuses during months of unrest in 2015 and 2016 in which hundreds of people were killed.
The Horn of Africa country declared six months of emergency rule in October after more than a year of violent protests in its Oromiya and Amhara regions. Demonstrators in the areas say the government has trampled on their political rights. The state of emergency has since been extended by four months.

Fact-checking some of our opposition to Tedros Adhanom’s controversial & misplaced WHO aspiration
By Keffyalew Gebremedhin, The Ethiopia Observatory (TEO)
In trying to ensure rejection of Dr. Tedros Adhanom by the World Health Assembly (WHA) at its 70th session in Geneva, no doubt, Getahun Assefa G/Yesus‘s efforts are more than sincere.
That’s why I would like to assure him that all of us would stand with him in his every effort to sway the majority of the 194 WHA states members into denying the Ethiopian candidate their votes during the May third-quarter election processes. This is not a matter of the candidate being Ethiopian or not, or TPLF official, our beef with him is his incompetence.
