  1. Language issues
    Sometimes ago, just a few days after the new Prime Minster was inaugurated, ESAT commentators were discussing about the changes they would like to see in the new Ethiopia. One of the commentator said, we oftentimes focus on removing and replacing TPLF agents including the national security head and others. Then he added, for him the most important and critical issue is how to change the education system in Ethiopia. His major concern was the way children are groomed and raised with self-awareness about self-identity vs Ethiopianism which he described as a grave concern for him. Then he suggested the Prime minister should assign someone who can change the education system. Then our Prime Minister came-up with list of rhetoric which appears echoing the above assimilative notions in rebuilding one Ethiopia through adding to the melting pot “unity, madamar++++, Ethiopia+++++, Minilik+++++, forgiveness, no regional boundary but imaginary lines for administrative purposes, etc.” Oneness or assimilative unity is similar to adding all ingredients to the mix lose their original shape and become part of a homogeneous liquid, while multicultural is to be more like cultural mosiac. Language varieties are all part of the same plate, but are obviously separate, and contribute their unique flavors and textures to the whole. Oromo cannot accept any attempt to add to one melting pot. Anyone attempt to erase the history is like trying to pull us one step behind. Rather, our expectation was Afaan Oromo to become national language. Remember Qeerro’s question during the uprising (three month ago) and still waiting for answer from the government;.
    • Lafti keenya lafee keenya;
    • Lafa keenyarraa buqa’uun dhiiibbaaf qabiyyeedha;
    • Finfinneen kan Oromooti;
    • Afaan Oromoo afaan mootummaa fi afaan jiruu ta’huu qaba;
    • Oromoon kansaa irratti abbaa biyyummaa argachuu qaba, etc.

    They know how the education system is important in shaping and mental modeling for the children. The attempt to divert/change the content of the current education system is an attempt to nullify our culture and language. It is an attempt not to educate our children about the Oromo history in their language; to build a homogenous Ethiopia. Simply this is a wrong direction and should be stopped. As a parent and as Oromo person, I suggest that curriculum change for education quality improvement is always supported but any attempt to minimize the Oromo language or change to the education system to remove the content of Oromo history is unacceptable.

    Cheers
