  1. It’s Abboy Sebhat that is taking the Ethiopian people for a fool. Although the initial capital of the Relief Society of Tigray (REST), which was established in 1978, was ill-gained according former TPLF leaders, let us take the statement of Sebhat at face value. Yet, equating TPLF’s current role in Ethiopia’s economy to its initial REST capital is dubious. Basic question, how many billions of capital inflows Ethiopia received since TPLF came to power? Surely, it’s billions times more than the initial capital of REST, which is some millions of dollars. Sebhat want us to believe as the source of the TPLF-affiliated conglomerates economic power in Ethiopia. Who’s fooling who? Surely, the economically dominant power of the TPLF its political profiteering.

Among others, I don’t understand why TPLF leaders like Sebhat explain the likes of REST and its extended oligarchy, the Endowment Fund for the Rehabilitation of Tigrai (EFFORT), in terms of its initial capital. It’s less than foolhardy. First, EFFORT was established in 1995, which was five years after TPLF control political power as a government. It sounds like an alien government to claim that EFFORT is the sole property of the TPLF whereas TPLF acts the core of the Ethiopian government. Second, it is the growth of the REST by profiteering via political connections, unfair trade practices, political protection, nepotism, corruption, and rent-seeking that gave birth to the conglomerates of the EFFORT companies that dominate and control Ethioia’s economy. And EFFORT expanded and grew millions fold from the initial capital of the REST, Sebhat likes want us to believe it as the sole property of the TPLF. They want the Ethiopian people to ignore the profiteering schemes of the TPLF leaders for over 25 years that grew their economic oligarchies. They want us to just focus on the initial capital of REST as the explanation for the TPLF ownership of EFFORT and REST. Questioning the economic domination of EFFORT & REST is not foolish. It’s logical based on solid facts of the Ethiopian economy and its domination by EFFORT. It’s accepting the bone-head explanation of Sebhat that is very foolish. EFFORT is part of the core problem to create an equal opportunity economy. Take or leave it!

When it comes to investing its initial capital in Tanzania or elsewhere, I wish TPLF did it back then. Perhaps, it could have added to fair competition to the economy and reduced nepotism, political favoritism and rent-seeking in Ethiopia’s economy.
