“A Chick is Not Expected from Snake’s Egg” Oromo Liberation Front (OLF) Press Release
On April 18, 2017, the so called Ethiopian Human Rights Commission (EHRC) reported to the Woyane/EPRDF House of Peoples’ Representative the result of its investigations into the popular uprising in Oromia and other parts of Ethiopia. The head of the commission and member of the TPLF, Adisu Gebregziabher, presented the report. According to the report, 495 people were killed during the peaceful protests and at the Irrechaa festival in Oromia, 140 people were killed in the Amhara regional state, and 34 people were killed in Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples region.
As expected, the so called investigation that was conducted by the EPRDF’s Human Rights Council put the blame for the massacre of innocent Oromo people on parties that are not truly responsible for the crimes committed. Among the parties that the commission held responsible for the heinous crime that the Woyane government itself committed are the Oromo people, Oromo Liberation Front (OLF), Oromo Federalist Congress (OFC), and Oromia Media Network (OMN). The OLF and the Oromo mass, as well as the entire Ethiopian population, did not expect that a Human Right Commission that was established, supported, and led by the Woyane regime will hold the perpetrators of these crimes accountable and bring them to justice. The Oromo proverb, “a chick is not expected from snake’s egg”, sums up what is expected from EHRC.
Merciless killings, tortures, rapes, disappearances, and imprisonments of innocent people in different regions of Ethiopia by the minority group did not start after peoples’ peaceful protest in the last two years. It has been happening at different times, and in different regions, since the dictatorial regime came into power. The EPRDF forces have committed major massacres in Finfinnee/Addis Ababa (in 2005), Sidama, Gambella, Ogaden, and Konso to mention just a few. People who were responsible for these massacres were encouraged and awarded with promotions by the TPLF/EPRDF leaders. No one has ever been persecuted for these heinous crimes. The current prime minister himself, Hailemariam Desalegn, had a responsibility in the massacre of the Sidama people. Another person who is responsible for the ethnic cleansing in Gambela, Dr. Barnabas, was also never brought to justice for his crimes and this exacerbated the killings.
It was an open secret that the EPRDF government has made a huge attempt to hide the massacre of the Oromo people from the international community. When all of its efforts in hiding failed, thanks in part to modern technology, it tried to diminish the number of people that are summarily executed by its army and police forces. That too did not produce what EPRDF/TPLF hoped for as several human rights groups and international media started scrutinizing the situation and pressure mounted for independent investigations.
The current theatrical act was therefore designed to once again mislead the international community and buy time for its grip on power and kill more. of the Oromo people, and other people that were struggling for their democratic rights in Ethiopia, by an independent and impartial body. The OLF has also been repeatedly expressing its conviction that no one will be held accountable for crimes that were committed until a thorough investigation is conducted by an independent body. Knowing very well the crimes it has committed, and being afraid of the consequences of independent investigations, the EPRDF/TPLF government denied all requests by the United Nations, the European Union, and other human rights organizations for independent investigations of ethnic cleansing that took place in Oromia and other parts of Ethiopia.
A government that speaks the truth and has a confidence in its innocence has no reason to be afraid of an investigation by an independent international human rights group. The only reason that the EPRDF/TPLF regime blocks such an investigation is due to the fact it knows the crimes it has committed against the innocent Oromo people in Oromia and other peoples in Ethiopia.
Because the EHRC is appointed and led by the EPRDF/TPLF, it cannot independently and impartially investigate the crimes committed by the government forces. That is precisely why the investigation did not cover the entire Oromia region. Therefore, the OLF would like to make it clear that the outcome of this investigation is not credible and thus it is totally unacceptable to the Oromo people. Also, the OLF and the Oromo people will resist any attempt by the EPRDF/TPLF regime to ban future Irrechaa festivals from being celebrated by millions based on this fabricated report of this so called human rights commission.
Finally, the OLF would like to renew its calls to all international organizations, the European Union, other governments, human rights organizations, and all peace loving people of the world to exert the utmost pressure on the minority dictatorial regime in Ethiopia to immediately stop the killings and mass arrests of peaceful protesters and also allow an independent investigation into the killings, tortures, rapes, disappearances, and imprisonments of tens of thousands in that country. Ending the era of deceit by a brutal gangster group that uses democracy as a camouflage for power is a must for peace, stability, and prosperity to come to our region.
Victory to the Oromo People!
